Great Leaders Inspire Great Talent
The ‘Asia’s Most Inspiring Executives’ award was presented to Don Paulino, Managing Director and Vice President Upstream Philippines, for maintaining and continually striving to reach his vision of a bright, progressive Philippines through his inspiring leadership, safety-first mindset and people empowerment.
Don’s Shell career spanned over 27 years including assignments in the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Australia. He joined Shell in 1994, starting his career in Tabangao Refinery, then moved to SPEX prior to taking on various international assignments. In 2016, he returned to the Philippines as SPEX’s General Manager where he gamely took on the role as Malampaya’s chief integrator, coach, cheerleader, and aircover. For over 5 years, Don passionately pursued growth opportunities for SPEX and the local upstream industry while ensuring that Malampaya safely, reliably and efficiently powered up to 30% of Luzon’s power requirements.
Under his leadership, SPEX’s stellar operational and social performance was honored with multiple internal and external awards such as Shell Upstream Asset of the Year winner in 2019, multiple Quill Awards, Anvil Awards, Asia Pacific Stevie Awards, and the CSR Excellence Awards.
Sustaining the environment and communities
The ‘Top Community Centric Companies in Asia’ category award was given to SPEX for its continued dedication to nation-building, care for the environment, enriching and empowering the lives of communities, and creating a sustainable future for the Philippines. This commitment is seen in Shell’s partnership with three social arms and their very relevant programs in host communities of Palawan, Oriental Mindoro and Batangas:
- Pilipinas Shell Foundation and their programs like Movement Against Malaria, Access to Energy, and For the Heroes (a COVID-19 response);
- Malampaya Foundation Inc and their programs that restored and re-populated endangered marine species in Palawan while providing supplementary livelihood for fisherfolk and their families living in coastal communities; and
- Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. which has consistently promoted care for the rich flora and fauna of Mindoro across the people of Mindoro, other conservation groups.
Innovation in mobility with eco-bricks
The ‘Green Innovation Award’ was presented to Pilipinas Shell as the first company in the Philippines’ gas-and-energy sector to build a commercial building in a service station using eco-bricks.
The mobility station in Plaridel, Bulacan used 26,512 eco-bricks manufactured by Shell partner Green Antz Builders. The eco-bricks were made from 1,200 kilograms of upscaled plastic waste, which is equivalent to 80,000 lubricant bottles. This initiative reduced the tremendous amount of 1.2 metric tons of plastics coming from all over the province that could have overwhelmed Bulacan’s landfills; it also averted the release of 6,065 kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The Plaridel station’s eco-bricks allow for greater insulation, which in the long run drastically reduces energy consumption, resulting in lower financial costs and adverse environmental impact. They are compact and stronger than traditional hollow blocks and are not vulnerable to fire hazards.
Pilipinas Shell, through its social development arm, Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI) also partnered with Green Antz to set up an eco-brick manufacturing hub in Cagayan De Oro. Pilipinas Shell has plans to build approximately new 50 Mobility stations completely made from eco-bricks within the five years, as well as upgrade its existing 1,100 sites nationwide.
Making the future
For more than 107 years, Shell remains committed to progress by actively working to be the Philippines’ partner in nation-building. The company pursues the latest in innovation today to create a better future for energy tomorrow.

Shell Plaridel Bulacan is a pioneering initiative as it houses the first commercial building made of upcycled plastic eco-bricks in the Philippines, and the first in Shell’s worldwide network.

Don Paulino, General Manager and Managing Director of Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX), was presented ‘Asia’s Most Inspiring Executives’ award in the 2021 Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards (ACES). He has maintained and continually attained to reach his vision of a bright, progressive Philippines through his inspiring leadership, safety-first mindset, and people empowerment.

In recognition of Shell's commitment to nation-building, three Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards (ACES) were presented to the company.
